*A bill in the Alabama Legislature seeking to prevent prisoners from being returned home without organs has moved closer to becoming law. Mar. 22,2024- HB200 introduced by Rep. Chris England, D-Tuscaloosa.   

In response, after families across the state claimed their loved ones, who died while in the  custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections, had their organs taken out during autopsies and never returned.England’s bill would make retaining a person’s organs without notification and consent of the person’s next of kin a Class C felony. All medical examiners in Alabama are subjects to this legislation. A Class C felony can carry a prison sentence of 10 years under Codex law ,13A-5-6, Alabama Code 1975.
